eSIM compatibility checker

Type your phone or tablet model. We'll tell you whether it supports eSIM, how dual-SIM works on it, and the region-specific caveats that trip travelers up (mainland China iPhones, US-only eSIM-only iPhone 14+, and so on).

The caveats most travelers miss

US iPhone 14, 15, 16, and 17 have no physical SIM tray. They're eSIM-only by design. This is fine for travel (eSIMs are the whole point), but it means you can't buy a physical SIM at a kiosk in your destination — you have to use an eSIM provider. Rest-of-world iPhone 14 through 17 still ship with both a physical SIM tray and eSIM support. The exceptions are iPhone 16e and iPhone 17 Air, both of which are eSIM-only globally — no physical SIM tray on any region.

Mainland China iPhone variants don't support eSIM at all. This is a regulatory exclusion, not a phone limitation. If you bought your iPhone in China (or it's a grey-market China-region unit), eSIM is not available. Same caveat applies to many Galaxy S and Note variants sold in China, Hong Kong, and India.

Phone unlock status matters. Even on an eSIM-supporting phone, a carrier-locked unit won't accept a foreign cellular network. Carriers usually unlock for free if your account is current and the phone is paid off — but the request can take 1-3 business days, and the fix is much harder once you're already abroad.

Older Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 had limited carrier support at launch. Both were technically eSIM-capable but only worked with Google Fi initially. Current Android builds have broadened support to most major carriers, so if you're on a recent OS update, you're likely fine. Pixel 4 and newer have always had broad eSIM support.

When in doubt, check the manufacturer spec sheet. Our database covers the most popular models on the market, but the global phone market has thousands of variants. If your specific model isn't listed, check Apple, Google, or Samsung's official spec sheet for your exact model number — eSIM support is always documented in the cellular section.
